Card declined
The most common reasons an Echlon card is declined — starting with card balance, the #1 cause — and how to fix each one yourself.
Why this happens
Your Echlon card doesn't spend directly from your Checking balance. Cards draw on a separate card balance that you top up from Checking. This protects your main funds — but it's also the single most common reason a card is declined: the card itself is empty, even though Checking has plenty.
1. Insufficient card balance (the #1 cause)
Symptom: the decline happens at any merchant, and your Checking balance looks fine.
Fix:
- Open the card in your Echlon app.
- Check the card balance — not your Checking balance.
- Top up the card from Checking with at least the purchase amount.
- Retry the purchase.
Tip: for recurring charges (subscriptions, ads), keep a buffer on the card so renewals don't fail between top-ups.
2. Card is locked
Symptom: every transaction declines, regardless of amount or merchant.
Fix: open the card in the app and check its status. If you (or a teammate with card access) locked it, unlock it and retry. If the card shows as locked and you didn't lock it, contact support before unlocking — it may have been locked for a security reason.
3. Merchant-category restriction
Symptom: the card works in most places but declines at a specific type of merchant (e.g., a category restricted by the card program).
Fix: Note that some merchant categories are also restricted at the card program level and cannot be changed — if the category is program-restricted, the transaction won't be approved on this card. For the full list of categories blocked on every Echlon card, see Blocked merchant categories. If the merchant isn't on that list, try a different payment method or contact support to confirm.
4. Geographic restriction
Symptom: declines only happen with merchants in certain countries, or while traveling.
Fix: check that the merchant's region isn't restricted — see our Prohibited Activities & Jurisdictions page for more information.
5. Expired or cancelled card
Symptom: the card has stopped working everywhere, often after working fine for a long time.
Fix: check the card's expiry date and status in the app. If it's expired or cancelled, issue a replacement and update any saved card details with merchants and subscriptions.
6. Network or merchant outage
Symptom: a decline with no obvious cause, often affecting other people at the same merchant or at the same time.
Fix: wait a few minutes and retry, or try a different merchant. Check Echlon's status page for any active incident.
Common questions
The merchant says the charge went through, but I see a decline. Who's right?
Check the card's transaction list in the app. If no settled charge appears, the transaction didn't complete on our side. A pending authorization that later disappears was never charged.
Why does the card decline a small amount when the balance covers it?
Some merchants (hotels, fuel stations, rentals) authorize more than the purchase amount as a temporary hold. The card balance must cover the hold, not just the final price. See Refunds and pending card authorizations.
Can a teammate's settings cause my card to decline?
If your team uses shared card management, a teammate with card permissions can lock a card or change its controls. Check the card's status and controls first.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Card balance ≥ purchase amount (plus possible hold)?
- Card status: active, not locked, not expired?
- Merchant category or region not restricted by the card program?
- Status page: any active incident?
