Verification
Why verification exists, the onboarding flow, KYC and KYB checklists, dashboard statuses, restricted jurisdictions, data retention, and common issues.
Verification
Every Echlon account requires identity verification before you can have access to the full range of payment features. This page covers the full process — what to prepare, what to expect, and what to do if something goes wrong.
Why verification is required
Like banks and other financial services, Echlon's licensed banking partners and international compliance standards require identity verification for all individual and business users. This keeps your account secure, and ensures we can legally offer our services in your country.
The onboarding flow
After you create your account and verify your email, onboarding has three steps:
- Set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) — You'll configure an authenticator app (e.g., Google Authenticator, Authy) for your account.
- Accept the Terms of Service — You'll review and accept the Terms of Service from our banking infrastructure partner. This is a quick in-app step.
- Complete identity verification — You'll upload your documents and complete a liveness check through our verification partner, AiPrise. Everything happens inside the Echlon website — there's nothing extra to download or sign up for.
Individual verification
To verify your identity as an individual, you'll need the following:
1. Government-issued photo ID
- Passport, national ID card, or driver's license.
- Must be current (not expired) and clearly legible.
- If the document has a front and back (e.g., national ID, driver's license), you'll need images of both sides.
2. Selfie or liveness check
- A quick photo or short video to confirm you are the person on the ID.
- Done in-app during the verification flow — no separate upload needed.
3. Proof of address
- Only required if the country on your ID is different from the country you currently live in, or if you're asked for it during the process.
- Must show your name and residential address, dated within the last 3 months.
- Accepted: utility bill (gas, electric, water, internet), bank or credit card statement, government-issued letter (e.g., tax notice), tenancy agreement.
Business verification
Business verification requires documents about the company itself and about the people who own or control it. It's worth gathering everything before you start — the process goes much faster when you have it all ready.
Company documents
- Certificate of Incorporation — the official government document proving your company was legally formed. May also be called Certificate of Formation (LLC), Certificate of Registration, or Certificate of Organization.
- Articles of Association — the document governing internal company rules. Alternatives: Operating Agreement (LLC), Corporate Bylaws, Partnership Agreement, Memorandum of Association.
- Proof of ownership — a document showing who owns the company and in what proportions. Examples: shareholder registry, register of members, cap table, operating agreement with ownership details.
- Tax identification document — official proof of tax registration. US: EIN confirmation letter from the IRS. UK: UTR letter from HMRC. Other countries: equivalent local tax ID.
- Last 3 months of bank statements — from your primary business bank account. Must show company name, account number, and transaction history.
- Proof of where your business funds come from — this helps us understand how your business operates and is a standard requirement for all business accounts. Bank statements usually cover this, but we may also ask for invoices or contracts depending on your business type. For brand-new companies without much history, we may ask for this information from the main owners instead.
- Proof of business address — a utility bill, commercial lease, bank statement showing the address, or a government-issued letter. Required even for virtual offices. If your business operates entirely remotely, the personal address of a main owner or director can be used instead.
- A short description of your business — what your company does and how you plan to use Echlon. This can be a brief written description, your website, or supporting documents like a service agreement.
Beneficial owners & control persons
For every individual who directly or indirectly owns 25% or more of the entity, and/or is a control person (CEO, managing director, or equivalent), you'll need:
- Photo ID — passport, national ID, or driver's license. Front and back if applicable.
- Proof of personal address — same requirements as individual verification (dated within 3 months).
Verification statuses
Your verification status is shown in your dashboard. Here's what each status means:
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Not started | You haven't begun the verification process. | Go to Onboarding to start. |
| Pending | Your documents have been submitted and are under review. | No action needed. You'll receive an email when the review is complete. |
| Verified | Your identity has been confirmed. Your account is fully active. | You can fund your account and start transacting. |
| Action required | We need additional information or documents from you. | Return to the verification page — you'll see what's needed. Upload the requested documents to continue. |
| Rejected | Your verification was declined. | You'll receive an email with the reason. If you believe this is an error, contact support. |
What happens after verification
Once you're verified:
- You'll receive a confirmation email.
- Your account is fully activated — you can receive payments, send payments, and access all supported features.
Verification is a one-time step, but we do run routine checks on all active accounts as part of our compliance requirements. If we ever need anything from you, we'll reach out by email.
Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD)
Users from certain jurisdictions may be subject to Enhanced Due Diligence, which requires additional documentation and a longer review period. Countries currently subject to EDD include Russia, Belarus, Venezuela, Myanmar, and South Sudan.
If EDD applies to you, you'll be notified during the verification process with clear instructions on what additional documents are needed.
Restricted jurisdictions
Echlon cannot provide services to users in certain countries. Users located in or operating from the following places are not able to access the platform:
- Cuba
- Iran
- North Korea
- Syria
- The Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions of Ukraine
Using a VPN or similar tool to access Echlon from one of these locations is a breach of our Terms of Service and may result in your account being permanently closed. For the full list of restricted countries and prohibited activities, see the Prohibited Activities & Jurisdictions page.
Your data and privacy
The documents you submit are used only to verify your identity and meet our legal obligations. We don't sell your data. Everything is stored securely and encrypted, and only accessible to the people who need it. We're required to keep your records for at least 5 years after you close your account — after that, your data is securely deleted unless a longer retention period is required by law. For full details on how we handle your information, see our Privacy Policy.
Tips for faster verification
- Make sure all uploaded files are clear, uncropped, and fully readable.
- Accepted formats: PDF, JPG, and PNG.
- Ensure your name matches exactly between your ID and your account registration.
- Check that your documents are recent enough — proof of address must be dated within the last 3 months, and expired IDs will be rejected.
- For business accounts, gather all documents before starting — the process is smoother when you have everything ready.
- If any documents are not in English, we may request certified translations.
- Avoid blurry and scanned photos/documents.
Common issues
My verification has been pending for a long time
Individual verification typically completes within minutes to a few hours. Business verification can take up to 3 business days. If you've been asked for extra documents, the review can take a few extra business days once everything is received. If it's been longer than expected, contact support with your account email.
I was asked to resubmit documents
This usually means a document was unclear, expired, or wasn't quite the right type. Check the specific request on your verification page and resubmit with a clearer or more recent version. If you're not sure what's needed, contact support.
I was rejected but I don't know why
Common reasons include being in a country we can't currently serve, a mismatch in your documents, or missing information about your business ownership. If you think there's been a mistake, contact support and we'll take a look.
I'm in a country subject to Enhanced Due Diligence
You can still apply. EDD requires additional documentation and takes longer to review, but approval is possible if all requirements are met. Follow the prompts in the verification flow.
Why am I being asked where my money comes from?
As a financial platform, we're required to have a basic understanding of the funds moving through our system — this is standard practice across the industry, like when a bank asks about the source of a large deposit. It's not a sign that anything is wrong. Providing clear documents (like bank statements, invoices, or contracts) is the fastest way to get through this step.
Does using a VPN affect my verification?
It can. We check that the location you're accessing Echlon from is consistent with the country you've registered under. If there's a mismatch, your account may be flagged for a manual review. Using a VPN to access the platform from a country where Echlon is not available is against our Terms of Service and may lead to your account being closed.
