Closing your account
How to close your Echlon account in the right order — Treasury and card balances first — what happens to your funds afterward, how long the review takes, and where data retention rules live.
Before you close: consolidate your balances
Your funds live in three places. Your balance is always yours, but moving everything back into your Checking balance before you close keeps it easy to access afterward:
- Withdraw from Treasury. Exit yield products and move the funds (including accrued yield) back to Checking balance — redemptions are on-demand and processed quickly in normal conditions; in rare market disruption they may be delayed.
- Empty card balances. Move your remaining card's balance back to Checking and cancel your active cards.
- Wait for pending items. In-flight payments, pending card authorizations, open disputes, or expected refunds should settle first — refunds arriving after closure are harder to recover.
Steps to close
- Confirm Treasury and all card balances are at zero and no payments are pending.
- Download any statements, receipts, and CSV exports you'll need later — see Account statements, receipts & transaction exports. After closure, retrieving documents requires contacting support.
- Go to Settings → Security and choose Close account. You'll be shown exactly what is deactivated and what we are required to keep, and asked to confirm with a security code.
Your account keeps working while we review it. Every closure is reviewed by our team, normally within 5 business days, and your account stays fully usable until it is processed — so you can still move balances out and download exports. You can cancel the request yourself from the same screen at any point before then.
If you'd rather not use the app, you can still email [email protected] and we'll raise the request for you.
What happens to your funds after closure
Echlon is non-custodial: your Checking wallet is a digital wallet that you control. Closing your Echlon account ends your access to Echlon's services — payment corridors, cards, and Treasury — but the wallet itself, and any USDC in it, persists on the blockchain and remains under your control. It does not change who owns your money: your balance remains yours, and Echlon cannot control or withhold your funds, even after your account is closed.
Recommended: move your balance out before you close. Your funds stay yours either way, but transferring your Checking, card, and Treasury balances out first is the simplest way to keep easy access to them after closing.
Critical: secure your wallet access before closing. Make sure you can access the wallet independently of the Echlon app.
Data retention
Even after closure, financial regulations require Echlon to retain your verification records and transaction history for at least 5 years. Closure deletes your access, not the records we're legally obligated to keep. Retained data remains protected under our privacy policy and is used only for legal and regulatory purposes. For the full picture of what we keep, how long we keep it, and how to make a privacy or deletion request, see Data retention & deletion.
Common questions
Is there a fee to close?
No — closing your account is free. You can start it yourself in Settings → Security.
How long does closure take?
Every closure is reviewed by our team, normally within 5 business days, and your account stays usable until it is processed. Consolidating balances and waiting for pending items to settle is usually what takes the most time, so start there.
I have a payment under compliance review. Can I close anyway?
No — open reviews must resolve first. See Why is my payment under review?
What happens to my team members' access?
All team access ends when the account closes.
Can I change my mind?
Yes. Until the request is processed, Cancel closure request in Settings → Security withdraws it and nothing changes. Once the request is with our compliance team for review, contact support to withdraw it.
Will everything be deleted?
No, and we'd rather say so plainly. Your API keys, webhook endpoints, sessions, profile photo and any unsubmitted onboarding drafts are deleted, and your cards are cancelled. Your verification records and transaction history are retained for the periods set out in our Terms of Service — we're legally required to keep them, and a deletion request cannot override that while the obligation is in force. Once a retention period has run and no legal hold applies, the records are disposed of.
Can I reopen a closed account?
If you'd like to reopen a previously closed account, contact support at [email protected] — we'll confirm whether reactivation is available for your account.
